Neal just quit his job and found his girlfriend having sex with his best friend. Luckily, like all good rom-com heroes though, Neal has a group of buddies who rally around him with an idea for perking him up. Neal answers the missed connections adverts of lonely girls, posing as the person they passed on the train. He sets up a date, and then loiters in the background as they sit there, supposedly stood up. Just when they are about to leave he swoops in as Neal, a charming, kind, stranger who would never do such a thing. The plan works well, until the same woman keeps showing up to his dates.

Missed Connections is a fine romantic comedy that uses it's independence to break free of the cliches tarnishing the genre. Largely funded through Kickstarter and the good old fashioned technique of calling in favours and goodwill from colleagues, the film has a fresh and friendly feel to it. This is only helped by the ensemble cast and the real-life marriage of the two leads, Dorien Davies and Kenny Stevenson, who also wrote the script. The film is produced by Religulous' Lisa Rudin and is the directing debut Eric Kissack, editor of The Dictator. High on the charm, low on the cheese, Missed Connections is everything an indie rom-com should be.
