People loved Jason Becker. “If only he’d lived”, they say. Except – Jason Becker is not dead yet.
Considered by many to be a guitar prodigy and a virtuoso, by 19 Jason was about to embark on a tour with David Lee Roth (the holy grail of gigs for a guitarist) when he was struck down by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease ALS is a degenerative motor neuron condition that leads to complete paralysis. Most who contract it are dead within five years. 22 years on, not only is Jason alive but he is still composing music, using only eye movement via a computer system created by his father.
It’s this level of devotion from his parents and friends that most shines through. Like a small business, their support not only keeps Jason alive but also allows him a meaningful life. From attending live performances of his own work, to communicating advice to young guitarists, his talent continues to flourish and influence people.
Moving first through talking head recollections and footage, in the second half of the film Jason takes up the story himself, introducing himself as the “sexiest man alive.” Moving but never maudlin, the film is an inspiring triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the power of love.
