Short Synopsis:

When their car breaks down on a site-seeing tour of California, two Japanese siblings wind up stranded in a small desert town.

Review:

Little RockJapanese brother and sister Rintaro and Atsuko are on a road-trip across America, inspired by their father. Rintaro speaks some English, but Atsuko has none. When their rental car breaks down in the small, culturally desolate town of Little Rock, they are forced to take a room at a motel and wait for its replacement to arrive.

Little Rock is not the America they were expecting. Here they meet that cinematically familiar crowd: a group of young adults with nothing better to do than shotgun beers and taking drugs. For a while they join in, initially eager to experience a culture utterly unlike their own. Utterly unfamiliar though is the character of Cory, an eccentric loser, nearly convinced that these partygoers are his friends, but latching on to the siblings so fiercely that you realise he must be searching for something more. In particular Cory attaches himself to Atsuko, where the language barrier allows each to perceive each other as a blank slate and to project the conversation they want to have on to the other.

Little Rock has been picking up awards and plaudits across the festival circuit. It is a fascinating film about approaching America from an outside perspective, about the ultimate disconnect between individuals and the role of language in relationships. Touching, gentle and funny, Little Rock is a masterful indie film
