Review

This film is a testament to the enduring power of Shakespeare’s work and the imagination of today’s filmmakers, providing a fresh and original perspective on the story whilst retaining the tragic power of the original play. The film sees Caesar ruling over a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a bleak landscape of abandoned warehouses, empty fields and burned out buildings populated by warring gangs of youths.

Remaining faithful to the play, the film tells the story of Brutus and the great betrayal he commits after being duped into joining a conspiracy by the deceitful and greedy Cassius.  In murdering Caesar the conspirators sow the seeds for their own downfall, as their betrayal inspires hatred and revenge in Caesar’s allies Mark Anthony and Octavius. Brutus is conflicted and must prepare for war with the forces mounting against him, whilst haunted by the ghost of his murdered friend.

Beautifully shot in striking black and white, and maintaining the original Shakespearian dialogue, the film is at once theatrical and cinematic. Not shying away from the story’s violence, the elements of gang culture provide a contemporary bite. The acting is uniformly strong, backed up by a powerful and moving score, while its gritty aesthetic mixed with the epic orations achieve an arresting, otherworldly atmosphere.
