Short Synopsis:

Holy Rollers follows the rise of arguably the largest and most well-funded blackjack team in America-made up entirely of church-going Christians.

Review:

Holly RollersThe Church Team is united by two things: Christianity and Blackjack. An unconventional combination, given Christianity’s anti-gambling stance; members justify their actions by their great returns while essentially beating the enemy. Following in the footsteps of the now infamous MIT Blackjack team who used card-counting techniques to beat casinos throughout the 1980s and 1990s, The Church Team utilise logic and maths at the Blackjack table. Through humorous interviews and footage of the team unleashing their skills in various casinos the viewer gains an intimate insight into the workings of an extraordinary Blackjack team.

From small beginnings the team has grown through the recruitment and training of members across the United States, making them a great money-losing threat to casinos who have little patience for card-counters. The survival of the team is dependant more upon trust and friendship than skill so as the group expands, and the team dynamic changes, the chances of failure rise proportionally. The documentary predominantly follows the founders Colin Jones and Ben Crawford during a three-year period as the team deals with problems of internal politics, conscience and dwindling wealth. Intelligent, engaging, witty and extremely entertaining, Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card-Counting Christians is a fascinating documentary.
