Synopsis:

The Color Wheel is the sad, strange story of JR, an increasingly transient aspiring news-anchor, who forces her disappointing younger brother Colin to embark on a road trip to move her belongings out of her professor-turned-lover's apartment.

Review:

Color WheelColin is content living a dull, sexless life in the suburbs, until his wayward little sister JR enlists his help to move her belongings from the house of her ex. And so begins an acerbic road movie with a wickedly forked tongue.  JR’s failing acting career and the fact that she had been sleeping with her professor has been a cause for embarrassment for her entire family, and so the pair bicker their way across America like children, trading sarcastic comments and petty home-truths with one another, and anyone who is unfortunate enough to get in the way.

Vain and self-aggrandising, JR dreams of becoming a news anchor, but is unable to get through a sentence without using the word ‘like’ half a dozen times. Despite attempting to retain her dignity the final exchange with her professor/boyfriend is a disaster, prompting Colin to dryly comment “that was fun, where to now? How about an abortion clinic?”

As immature as they undoubtedly are, there is something charming about this pair of misfits who seem to only be good for one another. Shot on 16mm black and white film on a shoe-string budget, director Alex Ross Perry, who also plays Colin in a glorious moment of unabashed self-deprecation, wrings every last drop of painful, cynical humour from each uncomfortable situation.
