Review:

Days Gone By is the debut feature by director John Zhao who has made a deeply disturbing film with an impressive mastery of visual and audio techniques.

Days Gone By Pharmacist Mitch is trapped in a town plagued by a deadly illness, one which has infected his one love and soul mate Shelley. Whispers of a possible cure are driving Mitch frantic. When he has a chance encounter with Trixie, the daughter of the disturbing Dr. Scarpota. Mitch is enticed into making a risky deal for a chance to get this elusive cure. Dragged into Trixie’s world, the underbelly of society, Mitch must start making some difficult and dangerous decisions.

Analogue and digital forms are used side by side in a manner that beautifully emphasises the highs and lows of Mitch’s story. The use of contrasting colour and music add to what can only be described as a hallucinatory journey through this man’s desperate search for a cure to save his one love. The eerie quality of the dead town and the blatant disregard for morals by Trixie’s family make you feel uncomfortable, and yet let you relate with Mitch all the more as he navigates through these challenges in the best way he can. An uneasy yet truly compelling debut film.
