Review:

All That Remains Ellen, an endearing American, hitches a lift with Nakata, a frustrated business man, as she tries to escape Tokyo City and reach the sea. In California Ellen’s brother Ben is on his own expedition and takes onboard Sarah, whose extroverted monologues quickly erode his patience. As the two journeys unfold the characters’ understanding of themselves, and their lives, are challenged by those they are with. In turn, it forces them to question their perceptions of those they are both with and without. Nakata resigns from his desk job to pursue the passions he has always dreamed of and Sarah breaks off her relationship with her jailed husband. Meanwhile the siblings are separately trying to understand the changes in their lives.

A meditative look at companionship and comfort in a time of crisis, All That Remains is serene and beautiful film which takes a global look at very intimate moments. This haunting story examines the way in which strangers can have the ability to empathise, reconcile and heal, triumphing over a variety of boundaries and borders. Despite the difference in time and place, and the seeming separateness of the two journeys, directors Irle and Rotelli handle both lines with grace and elegance. The film builds with a gentle momentum to a powerful ending that draws the audience into their worldly and knowing take on compassion and human nature.
