Is Michael Bay
The New Hitchcock?

By Mike Ellis

From time to time, Raindance pauses and comments on one of the many strange things this world offers. It could be political, cultural or religious. Just plain straight wrong.
Here is today’s "Renounced"

Michael Bay The New Hitchcock? We don’t think so either.

I’m sure we’re all familiar with Michael Bay and his work.  For all our sakes I hope his project in development (A remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds) never makes it to the big screen, or the small screen for that matter.
Now a remake of The Birds may not seem like a typical Michael Bay project to most, but after his recent foray into producing classic horror film remakes (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror) it makes a little more sense.  Not enough sense to the point where people are willing to allow it though.
Michael BayThe project has been in talks since at least 2005 and the whole thing has left fans outraged.  With such a negative response from fans as well as directorial problems, the project has been pushed to a 2011 release and is still in development.
Most agree that the film need not to be updated in the first place, in a ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ sort of way.  And with Michael Bay’s tendency to overdue things a little bit, it seems the suspense and psychological horror brought to the screen by Hitchcock would be lost in the shuffle anyway.
Maybe Mr. Bay is not totally to blame though, he isn’t the first to attempt a remake of this kind. Gus Van Sant’s shot for shot remake of Psycho and countless other attempts to recreate Hitchcock’s classics are proof that perhaps we should let Hitchcock movies just be Hitchcock movies.
Let’s hope The Birds remake remains in production limbo indefinitely and we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief.  Just make us one last promise Michael, keep your hands of Vertigo.
