Short Synopsis:
A mother finally relives being 7 years old in a town destroyed by firestorm on a September 11th sixty years ago.
Review:
Running With Mum tells the story of how 12,000 citizens of the German town of Darmstadt were burnt to death by British bombs on the 11th September, 62 years ago.
Accompanied by the filmmaker’s son, director Martin Greave’s German mother walks the same route and speaks about the catastrophic damage caused by the phosphorus bombs and the general pointlessness of such an attack. Together they try to piece together the exact events of that night, a subject that she has never really come to terms with.
As well as commenting on their patriotism and the jingoistic behaviour that accompanied the Second World War, Running With Mum is also about the relationship between a mother and son.
Martin Greave’s documentary is commendable. Rather than being preachy and sensational, his effort is educational, thought provoking and very moving.
