Short Synopsis:
Shot in one, continuous take, PVC-1 is inspired by the true story of an innocent womans struggle for survival after she is fitted with a collar bomb.
Review:
In a bizarre act of terrorism, a poor Colombian family find themselves at the mercy of a gang of armed criminals who have broken into their home with the intention of extorting money from them. Attaching a plastic collar filled with explosives to the mother’s neck, the criminals disappear leaving a sinister threat- pay them fifteen million pesos and don’t call the police, or else the device will detonate.
Painstakingly shot in one continuous 84 minute steadicam take and set across four miles of terrain, the film follows the family as they come to terms with the horrific situation they have suddenly been thrown into, and the lengths they go to help each other – all amidst the uncertainty of whether the threat is real, or if it’s all just a sick, twisted prank.
While it’s easy to draw comparisons with Russian Ark or Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope on a technical aspect, P.V.C.-1 is an entirely different beast. It’s a groundbreaking thriller that provides a testament to South America’s filmmaking talent, and holds no reservations of throwing you straight into the middle of it all. Winner of numerous festival awards, Spiros Stathoulopoulos’s debut feature takes you on a tense, suspenseful and gripping journey- one that you certainly won’t forget. P.V.C.-1 was also in the official selection of the Director’s Fortnight at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
