Sacha Kullberg’s appropriately titled film tackles a subject matter that is usually kept behind closed doors: what happens to the body after death. It is, as she explains, a large subject matter that highlights contemporary themes such as ecological responsibility, the rise of the artisan and worries about overpopulation.

Kullberg investigates her theme in the three countries she lives between: Great Britain, Belgium and The Netherlands, following different people in their professions. We meet the curator of an exhibition about death; various coffin makers, a family living on a natural burial site, as well as various gravediggers and cremators. Without directly interviewing her subjects, Kullberg lets them gradually reveal their roles in the funerary process and divulge their thoughts on it.

There are interludes within the film where Kullberg tells us of her favourite quotations from her research. These are often spoken over a series of sometimes plain and seemingly unrelated images but the pauses themselves let one absorb the subject and bring a poetic edge to the film.

This documentary is notable in that it offers discourse on a subject that often goes without any, and not only raises questions that many may not have thought about before, but also offers some answers.
