London Premiere

Frank is something of a social misfit. His flat contains the chaotic hoardings of a lifetime, and yet out in public his life is guided by a set of obsessive compulsions: not walking on cracks, righting and lining up disorderly rubbish bins and so on. A senile mother and an unpleasant landlady don't make the best of companions for Frank, but that is about to change.

The first Sasha, a fellow lodger who seems to have some insight, or understanding into Franks state of mind, is surely benign. The second, a larger than life character called Fidel who Frank meets on the beach might not be. Frank invites Fidel back to stay, but he proves not to be the most gracious of houseguests.

Frank is a feature film by Richard Heslop, whose background is in making music videos for many big names, including The Cure, The Smiths, Paul McCartney and Sinéad O’Connor. It is perhaps no surprise then that the film’s delicate score transports us into Frank’s own, strange world where the real and unreal often intersect. Through Heslop's lense the industrial towns and windswept headlands of the North East take on a magisterial, almost poetic beauty and for this reason alone the film is worth your time. The bravura performances and bold script are added bonuses.
