The directorial debut of Odín Salazar is an artistic, almost poetic portrayal of the story of Lautaro, a ten-year-old boy on the verge of losing his innocence when his father is murdered. Within a rural setting and using a mix of fantasy and reality, the director shows the breakdown of a family and the determined strength of a child in overcoming the death of his father.

Located in the south of Mexico in the 1940s, Donkeys resembles the literary ‘magic realism’ worshipped by Mexican author Juan Rulfo in his literary masterpiece Pedro Paramo. Through the memories and fantasies of young Lautaro, a unique environment is created: the distinction between reality and fiction is blurred, as is the distinction between the living and the dead. The viewer becomes immersed in a kind of fantastical reality framed by the customs and traditions of rural Mexican life.

Abimael Orozco, the young actor who plays Lautaro, is an impressive discovery by the director. He brings a purity of narrative to the film, the result of which is an honest and captivating story which also features accomplished cinematography. Donkeys is an emotional, magical-realist ode to rural Mexico from a perspective of a young and troubled child.
