She works 70 hours a week and she’s another year older. Her best eggs have been fried in a fire at the fertility clinic and she has just lost the only potential sperm she could have got her hands on. It’s not the best of birthdays for Amanda. As if this wasn’t enough her gambling father turns up on her door step when he has lost everything and has nowhere else to stay.

High flying executive Amanda is past her prime, biologically speaking, and now she finds out that if she wants to have any children she will have to do it the traditional way, and fast! As her father gets familiar with the modern inventions in Amanda’s home, Amanda herself gets to work on her new project: finding an intelligent, fit, young, handsome and gentle man who’s excellent with children and happy to be a house husband. Easy.

City Slackers feels fresh and honest. While its characters are to an extent (funny and loveable) caricatures and the film is poking fun at the greedy city culture, it also deals with the ever growing confusion that gender roles present us with in modern times. The writing is thoughtful and witty, the acting is touching and the comedic timing is spot on. The added depth makes it a breath of fresh air amongst rom-coms.
