It is an adoption that should have never happened: unable to father children, Cemal feels his manhood threatened and, stuffing pillows down her shirt, persuades his wife Ayşe to fake a pregnancy. Several months later they produce Can, a newborn purchased from another family, and present the perfect family to the outside world. Behind the masquerade however the couple has become increasingly distant. While Cemal adores the little boy, Ayşe, too deeply troubled by the game of pretense, is unable to love him. Things get even worse when Cemal disappears without a word one day, leaving Ayşe without money, friends or family to care for a child she never wanted.

After the multiple award winner Three Apples Fell from the Sky (2008), Can is the second feature-length film offering from playwright and director of several shorts Tamer Çıray. Can was the first Turkish film to screen in the World Dramatic competition at Sundance and won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Prize for Artistic vision. Honouring the tradition of Yeşilçam – the golden age of Turkish cinema – it is a deeply felt drama which lays bare the suffering and sorrows of a few individuals caught up in an unfortunate but essentially inescapable situation.
