Selling ice to eskimos is said to the ultimate test of a salesman’s skill, but 67-year-old Marcel Lévesque knows that selling cars in the depths of a Quebecoise winter is a task just as arduous. This year is worse than any other; as the paper mill that provides the village’s livelihood threatens to close, buying cars is the last thing on these gentle people’s minds. Marcel is unperturbed, however, still recording his patter on a Dictaphone to see where he can improve and frustrating his adult daughter by refusing to retire.

An unhurried portrayal of a community on borrowed time, this film portrays every face and every moment with affection. Yet this is not the sentimental tale it could easily veer toward: the arresting opening sequence of a dead moose being dragged onto a truck instantly signals that something is rotten in this snow-swept timewarp.

We become so entranced by these beautiful shots of Canada that the sting in this narrative’s tail seems to hit twice as hard. Like ageing Marcel and the ailing community, we are left reeling by the unwanted and unexpected.
