Convicted in 1985 for the murder and rape of a 14-year-old girl, the DNA evidence many years later was inconclusive but Romell Broom remained accused. In 2009, his attempted execution via injected poison lasted nearly two hours with no success. With the event labelled as a “cruel and unusual punishment” and with doubts arising in the light of post-convictive evidence, the débâcle has sparked a major debate about the morality of execution and its conviction process.

This fascinating documentary interviews those involved in Romell Broom's case, from victims' family members to his own and the many officials who have worked on his case for almost thirty years.

Directed by Verhoeven and co-written with Luise Lindermair, this bold feature structures its content to gradually reveal the events before and after the shocking execution attempt. A balanced view is maintained throughout, painting a picture of a potentially innocent Romell.

Heartfelt accounts will shock and – surprisingly – inspire you, as you take in the mother of another murdered girl's story of courage and forgiveness. Will Broom be subjected to a second execution attempt, or will Ohio's lethal injection procedure be prohibited? Only time will tell.
