Short Synopsis:

Mother of Rock: Lillian Roxon shines a light into the decadent world of Max’s Kansas City, a tiny underground club in New York, and Lillian Roxon’s place in documenting the emerging rock revolution as it rolled over the US in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Lilian Roxton – Mother of RockWhen Lillian Roxon left her home town of Brisbane for the bright lights of New York City at the beginning of the 60’s she may have astonished even her outlandish self when she sky-rocketed to the top as one of the most influential rock journalists ever. Best known for her seminal 1969 opus ‘Encyclopedia of Rock’ she was the first journalist to take rock seriously and see that it could have a profound social significance beyond the charts.

She thrust herself into a scene of then up and coming musicians such as Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Iggy Pop. A staunch feminist she grew close to Germaine Greer who went on to dedicate her book, The Female Eunuch to her. She held court at New York’s hippest club, Max’s Kansas City where Andy Warhol and his friends at Factory, Salvador Dali and Elizabeth Taylor were all regulars and Debbie Harry waitressed.

Lilian wrote passionately about the music she loved and the film features a series of interviews with many of the musicians she helped make famous as well as revealing her own thoughts on the music of Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors, amongst others.

Her abrupt death at the age of 41 remains a mystery but she left behind her legacy as rock’s first champion and most brilliant critic.
