Review:

Kingdom of SurvivalShot through with radical liberal ideas, from Marxism to Anarchism, this documentary considers and challenges the inequalities, contradictions and immanent problems of modern society. With fascinating insights from the likes of Professor Noam Chomsky, the film doesn’t just communicate a political message but delves deeper into ideas about life and humanity, considering and analysing opposing and interconnected ideas - religion and art, materialism and spirituality.

Stylishly constructed, the film uses music and archive footage to great effect and seems a personal odyssey for filmmaker M.A Littler. It is a journey on which he expects no easy answers, and the film offers none, rather focussing on the general idea that there are alternatives to our current situation and that it’s not beyond comprehension that things could be better for everyone. As Littler puts it, the film is for ‘those who simply refuse to believe that what is, could not be another way’.

Despite presenting a challenging and somewhat bleak outlook on the world we live in, the films ends on an uplifting note with the philosophy of folk musician and cattle rancher Will ‘The Bull’ Taylor. A laid back and instantly endearing character he is exemplary of people who find something unbearably empty about what we’ve become, and yearn for something more simple, pure and beautiful.
