Short Synopsis:

Santiago, a twenty-something Argentinean takes a boat to Montevideo to claim land willed to him by his parents. On his way out of the capitol, he notices Juliette, a young Belgian woman who was also on the boat. After discovering they’re heading in the same direction, the two travelers hit the road together.

Beyond The Road (Por el Camino) Santiago, a young Argentinean, has left New York to find the land willed to him in Uruguay by his parents, who have died in a car crash. On the way he picks up a young Belgian hitchhiker Juliette, who is looking for a man she met in Costa Rica, now believed to be living in a hippie commune. Thus begins a charming and playful relationship, as the two travel across the stunning Uruguayan countryside.
Much of the joy in this movie comes from their interactions with the local characters. Shot in an almost documentary fashion, these scenes are genuinely enchanting and engaging. Communicating in English, their only shared language, Santiago and Juliette quickly become friends, sharing hotel rooms, but not beds. As their tender relationship begins to gently blossom, the pair arrives at the house of Santiago’s godfather, where among other glamourous guests, Naomi Campbell makes an odd, but effective cameo. Here Santiago and Juliette part ways, as she heads on to find the commune and the man she began this trip looking for.
Simply plotted, the director admits that the script became simply a guide during the shooting process. This works in the film’s favour, as the gently growing feelings between the two main characters, and the spectacular scenery, make Beyond the Road well worth anybody’s time to watch.
