Review:

A Rubber Band is ...Sporting one of the best titles in the festival, A Rubber Band is an Unlikely Instrument is a documentary about a man who is in love with sound. Since his very first guitar, Walter has been obsessed with vibration and noise, growing up to become an artist who finds beauty in every day life. A bleak, cold subway tunnel comes alive as he blows on a rubber band, creating a highly convincing trumpet sound, and then returns to an empty space as silence falls.

Walter and his wife, Andrea, are both artists struggling to cope in today’s fast-paced, business-oriented world. They are completely at odds with the Brooklyn society they inhabit, but perhaps more worryingly Walter is at odds with his family back home in Texas and with his estranged first son. He struggles to plan a future for himself, constantly creating music and consumed by ‘wants’ rather than ‘needs.’

The film is as much about Walter belatedly learning responsibility as it is the dangers of naivety and new-age hedonism - Walter and Andrea denounce all advertising and marketing as ‘a lie’ and have their own carpentry company, which is failing fast due to their disorganisation and preoccupations.  Every now and then, however, you get a glimpse of Walter’s amazing talent and think that maybe – just maybe – it’s all worth his while.
