Review:

Press Press is a study of alienation in the modern world: social and family life are its subjects and the insular world of Japanese high school students forms the context. Bullying, suicide and loneliness are major themes running through the plotline, balanced by insightful observations on human nature and the importance of intimacy.

Kumi is a young girl going through some rough times: while her parents battle out a divorce, she skips out on school to spend time with her one friend, Riyu, whose parents’ religion makes her a target for bullying. Both girls are considered ‘shut-ins’ – uncommunicative, lonesome and strange – and both are extremely unhappy with their lives. As Riyu’s bullying reaches a climax and Kumi discovers her father’s affair, matters seem to come to a boiling point for the girls, who begin considering some extreme measures.

Running parallel to Kumi and Riyu’s stories are the lives of more people who lack intimacy: a father facing bankruptcy and stuck in an unhappy marriage, a blind writer who can’t seem to be civil to people, a girl who bullies her best friend for the adulation of the popular crowd. Through pervading silences and scenes of individuals seemingly disconnected from the outside world, Press asks an important question: is a person a whole in themselves, or is identity defined through relationships?
