He doesn't say that he is leaving. He doesn't say goodbye to anyone. One more party, celebrating as if there was no tomorrow, and he is gone: Yunes, a 22-year-old engineering student from Yemen. When Yunes doesn't turn up again, his German friend and flatmate Chris is getting worried. And then 9/11 happens. Chris is shocked. Sitting in his flat in Berlin he wonders who his friend Yunes really was. The film won the First Steps Award 2003 for best feature film. MH

Elmar Fischer was born in 1969. After his degree in journalism, he has worked as author, director and producer for all German television stations. In 1995 he founded the Hier & Jetzt production company, for which he worked as managing director and chief editor until June 2000. Since then he has written in various genres for the youth magazine Jetzt and a Munich paper. In 2001 and 2002 he developed a concept for Jetzt.film, a TV series based on the profile of the magazine. After the short film Echelon (2001) Fremder Freund is his feature film debut.
