New Suit skewers Hollywood absurdity. The lying, stealing and deception -
Hollywood staples - are all here in this breezy, confident and funny satire.
Based loosely on the myth of the Emperor's New Clothes, New Suit is a screenplay
that just does not exist. Screenwriter Kevin Taylor, aptly played by Jordan
Bridges (son of Beau), arrives in Hollywood to pursue his dream of becoming
a success. He hooks up with Marianne Roxbury (played by Marisa Coughlan, every
bit as nasty as she was in Pumpkin) who is a very junior agent. Lesson number
one in Hollywood becomes: always vastly overstate your real importance.
Before Taylor can help himself, he has created a huge bidding auction for
his non-existent script. Everyone that matters in Hollywood, it seems, has either
read the script, or had a meeting with the writer. Enter Dan Hedaya's crass
producer character, Hansau, who attempts to outbid all others in a hilarious
series of mishaps.
New Suit is a dizzying display of the art of cutthroat dealmaking. As the
action escalates, Velle and screenwriter Craig Sherman keep everything on the
light side of serious, but still manages to score more points than many so-called
serious examinations of Hollywood. EG
FranĦois Velle, 40, left France in 1998 for LA. In France he directed for
TV, and earned 7 D'Or awards (the French Emmys). His debut feature, Commes des
Rois (Kings for a Day) earned critical acclaim, and Dreamworks have purchased
the remake rights, which Velle will co-produce.
