LA TRILOGIE: AN INTRODUCTION BY LUCAS BELVAUX

Let's envisage our respective lives as films. Each of us is the main character, surrounded by people more or less close to us who are themselves the main characters of their lives and for whom we play more or less secondary roles.

If we are the starting point, the centre of the world or of the film, by concentric circles (those closest to us, close friends, friends, acquaintances, and so on) we reach the ring of people we only encounter once in a lifetime, of whom we know nothing and who know nothing about us because in their lives (their film) we are only extras. The three films work on this principle of cross encounters. The main characters in one film have minor roles in the others and vice versa. Three films, three genres, three genre films.

The films form a whole but can be seen independently. Although they share sets, scenes and characters, they are 'genetically' different. The first is a thriller, the second a comedy and the third a melodrama. Fear, laughter, and tears. Genre films.

Lucas Belvaux started his career in the theatre and as an actor in film and television before directing his first feature in 1992. Trilogie is by far his most ambitious undertaking to date, experimenting with genre and exploring the mysteries of things not often seen. This exciting project cements Belvaux as a talented and adventurous auteur in contemporary French cinema.

After 15 years behind bars, Bruno Le Roux has finally escaped. He was the most highly armed member of the armed wing of a proletarian revolution sadly devoid of proletarian support. He has escaped to continue the fight, to liberate his comrades from prison and release the masses from their chains, once and for all.

But although Bruno hasn't changed during his 15 years inside, the world outside has. All his former allies, companions, comrades, and accomplices - those who are not dead or in prison - have given up the fight under pressure from close police surveillance.

Bruno is on his own. Perpetually jumping from one hiding place to another, from doorways to underground parking lots, he gives as good as he gets. But the night also has its angels, fallen though they may be.

Bruno meets Agn»s, a junkie looking for a fix. None of the dealers will supply her any more. A temporary alliance is formed. He finds her drugs and she hides him in her friend C»cile's house. Agn»s realises he's on the run. She doesn't want to know any more. They each have their own dark pasts, but together, their future remains to be seen. NJS

C»cile and Alain have been together for twenty years. Alain runs a hi-tech engineering company that is doing extremely well, and although she doesn't need to, C»cile continues to work at the local school. They seem to be an indestructible model couple, but C»cile begins to suspect Alain is hiding something from her. He is.

Alain thinks he's going to die. In a few days, he's having some investigative surgery. Alain doesn't want to hide it from C»cile, but doesn't want to worry her unnecessarily.

Despite his intentions, C»cile knows Alain is lying to her, so she asks Pascal, a policeman friend of theirs, for help. His investigations reveal nothing, much to his disappointment, for he has fallen for C»cile. So he's determined to come up with some dirt, even if he has to make it up. Alain has also noticed that his wife is concealing something from him: she's secretly been meeting a man who follows her around. He's afraid his wife has taken a lover, someone who's after his patents, and that she's an accomplice. But C»cile doesn't have a lover, Alain isn't seriously ill, and no one has designs on his patents. But nevertheless their self-destruction has been set in motion. NJS

Pascal is a cop. Agn»s, the women he loves, is addicted to morphine. Pascal can't stop her, so all he can do is spare her from the squalid side, from death on credit. Pascal has an agreement with a dealer, Jaquillat, who supplies him in exchange for Pascal turning a blind eye to his activities. Thanks to this, Agn»s has been able to carry on working and living an almost normal life. When Agn»s' friend C»cile comes to him with a problem with her husband Alain, Pascal becomes increasingly close to C»cile until, inevitably, he falls in love with her. Still in love with her husband, C»cile doesn't even realise. Pascal sees that if he wants to seduce her, he'll have to begin by destroying their relationship. Bruno Le Roux, a prisoner on the run, could be a way for Pascal to restore his image, but Jaquillat wants Le Roux too. When he asks Pascal to murder Le Roux, Pascal refuses, so Jaquillat cuts off his wife's morphine supply. For the first time, Agn»s can't get a fix. All the dealers know who she is and none of them will supply her. She accosts one, who beats her up on the street. It's a pitiful sight and more than the guy standing in the shadows can bear to watch. He comes to her aid. It is Le Roux. NJS
