Twenty-four-year-old Sarah Lohse (Brigitte Hobmeier) wanders aimlessly around Berlin, keeping appointments with therapists and staring vacantly at glass figurines in a department store. She shares a small apartment with loutish boyfriend Ben (Daniel Lommatzch), who routinely hosts alcohol- fuelled parties for a gaggle of boorish friends and takes every opportunity to belittle his wallflower flatmate.

It gradually emerges that Sarah's been institutionalized for six months for swallowing pills. Showing flickers of determination through her emotional fog, she gets a job pressing cutlery at a metal shop. Sarah and Ben get married, but their home life goes from bad to worse: Sarah begins to pilfer cutlery sets from her work and sell them at highway rest stops, clearly trying to build a nest egg with which she can leave Ben. When he steals the money to buy a home stereo rig, Sarah plans and implements an elaborate hoax.

With the washed-out digital video lensing underscoring the improvisational nature of the dramatic approach, and the acting mesmerisingly subtle and complex, Identity Kills is an absorbing study of alienation and mental illness. BW

S"ren Voigt was born in 1968 in Schleswig-Holstein. and studied directing at the filmschool in Lodz, Poland and at the German Film and TV Academy in Berlin. He graduated with his first feature film Tolle Lage (Perfect Sight) in 2000. In 2001 he founded Living Films OHG with Gergana Voigt.
