This a story about two very different people connected by the sea. Tony is
a Cuban-American Wall Street metal trader. While on vacation in sunny Key West,
Florida, he swims to intercept a wreck of a makeshift raft floating close to
the beach. Two names are carved into the wood of the raft - Pablo and Mariana
- are these the names of the two rafters who lost their lives in the wreck?
Moved by this unexpected encounter of a suspected tragedy in two unknown Cubans'
lives, Tony's life and his priorities instantly change. He decides to travel
back to Cuba to find the family of the rafters to tell them what he has found.
This journey also becomes a discovery of his own Cuban roots. After a short
search he meets and finds the family. Soon, shocked and surprised he finds the
beautiful Mariana whom he presumed had died at sea. She awakens in him his true
destiny, which is touchingly described in the epilogue of the movie through
an exchange of letters between the pair. It's a slow burning movie, which chronicles
the meeting of two distant souls, connected, but ultimately drawn apart again
by the sea. AK
