E difuinte@imcine.gob.mx Legendary Mexican actress Katy Jurado, winner of a
Golden Globe and the only Mexican actress to be nominated for an Oscar, made
her last screen appearance in this touching film based around the relationship
between an old woman and a young rebellious boy who stumbles across her house.
The woman happens to be Miss Esperanza Malagon Prieto, the first Latin-American
woman to win a Nobel Prize in literature, and a highly cultured lady. She bickers
with the boy over trespassing, landscaping and respect, but they find common
ground in their basic philosophies. Whilst the twelve-year-old Jorge argues
with his mother and schoolteacher on a daily basis, he begins to turn to the
old woman for lessons about life and Mexican culture. Esperanza duly responds
by teaching the boy about the values of life as their unique friendship continues
to grow, and the two find discover that the best attitude in life is to believe
in yourself and to follow your instincts. This is a beautiful film from Mexico
which captures the magical realism of the country as well as telling a genuinely
touching tale about the unlikeliest of friendships. The late Katy Jurado, who
will forever hold a place in Mexico's heart, gives a fine performance in her
last film. OH
Leopoldo Laborde has already had an impressive career at the age of 33 and
both wrote and directed A Beautiful Secret. This is his fifth feature film,
his debut being back in 1998 with Angeluz, which he also penned.
