Detdrich McClure's feature debut is a contemporary take on Easy Rider following
two men as they take to the road and leave their violent pasts behind. Panther
(Plummer) is an exgang member who believes that his life will straighten out
the minute he leaves LA. With his faithful sidekick, Ray (Spencer) the pair
head east on motorbikes. Their quest for booze and broads is interrupted when
they pick up a hitchhiker, College Boy (Pope), a film student trying to get
to Washington DC. Fate then deals the hapless trio a series of wild cards no
better then the racism and violence from which they have fled.
Music forms a big part of Road Dogs. The producers astutely hired hip hop
impresario Donnie Anderson, Snoop Dogg's manager. Anderson tapped artists as
diverse as Korn and Mystic to perform original material. Macy Gray's producer,
Daryll Swann also created a haunting musical score with songs by Debelah Morgan
and ODB of Wu Tang Clan. Road Dogs covers an amazing panorama of some of America's
beauty spots and is gloriously photographed. Plummer (Colors, Menace II Society),
Spencer (last seen at Raindance in Fakin' da Funk) and Pope (Family Matters)
give outstanding performances. A fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable road movie.
