Here’s a documentary with a highly amusing series of recollections and clips from a time when public access TV met punk rock in Manhattan Cable TV’s late ’70s show Glenn O'Brien's TV Party. It was live. It was, yes, a party. And it also gave neighbourhood access to all the friendly doped-up, dressed-up freaks on the block in what was clearly an affordable, creative and much more relaxed New York City between 1978 and 1982.
Debbie Harry fans will love her demonstration of how to dance the pogo as well her numerous appearances as one of the show’s regulars. But everyone will get much delight out of all the transvestism, can’t restism, rock music, shock music, meeting stars and starting meetings.
See cool cats on cameras, the maid doing the dusting, Andy Warhol’s janitor, a lesson in how to roll a spliff blindfolded, Robbie Coltrane looking decidedly uneasy, and those always useful comparisons between Hawaiian pot and the Californian variety.
Glenn O'Brien's TV Party was a frenzied outburst of raw drug-induced energy oblivious to the threats of phone-in callers and out-of-focus cameras pointing the wrong way.
From a time when New York had a huge community of emerging struggling artists, this is broadcasting with loads of broads – fake and real. CZ
