Bobby MacDowell is a pretty ordinary kid. The youngest of three he doesn’t want much, just to watch telly whenever he wants, eat crisps when he wants and basically be left alone. His sister Jackie doesn’t want much either, just to have a man in her life, and when she meets Del at the call-centre where she works its seems that her dreams may come true after all. Their brother Mike on the other hand has much bigger plans and has his heart set on being the next big name in photography; trouble is he doesn’t want to learn his craft; he just wants to get ‘the’ front-page shot – no matter what the cost. They all take their long-suffering mum, Bern, for granted. She picks up after them, she looks out for them, she goes without so that they don’t, she’s dying of breast cancer – they notice none of it.

Made for just £18k and filmed over a two weeks, Wickham Road is a great example of what can be achieved with initiative, talent and determination. Oliver Nash succeeds in offering a low-key slice of life that is touched with tragedy, regret and humour. Additional narration by Phil Daniels as the adult Bobby adds that extra touch of class. ED
