Monday 11th October 2004, 11am

Having run Raindance Film Festival for twelve years now, I have to say
that I was personally overwhelmed by the response to the festival this
year. We have never had so many sellouts - in fact if you add up all
the seats in all the screenings, we ran at about 80% of total capacity,
something that has never happened, to my knowledge, to any other
festival in the UK. So a big thank you to all the people who attended.
It looks like independent cinema is finally catching on in London!

A very big thankyou to all the filmmakers who allowed us to show there
films. The critical response to the films has been overwhelming, and I
have been told by industry professional after professional that the
Raindance Festival lineup was the best they have seen in a long while.

I also want to thank our sponsors: VMI and Panasonic for their
equipment, DORSEYS for financial, legal and moral support, NOKIA for
enabling the 15 second shorts competition for the second year running,
and DIESELfor their support and commitment to independent film and
filmmakers. Finally, I thank UGC CINEMAS for allowing us to use their
brand new cinemas at the UGC Shaftesbury and the UGC Haymarket.

FESTIVAL INTRODUCTION

This year is our strongest and most exciting celebration of the independent film scene yet. Throughout the festival, the diversity and, more importantly, the quality of all the features, shorts and documentaries is mouth-watering.

Again we have given particular prominence to new talent. Raindance Film Festival is the home of first-time filmmakers, and our programme gives a platform to an unprecedented number of directorial debut features.

On top of this cornucopia of the newest and boldest international cinema we are proud to welcome two of the UK’s finest filmmakers, the perhaps different but equally revered Shane Meadows and Terry Jones are in residence. We’re also flying in the Fellini of the Bikini, Steven Grasse to give the lowdown on the US approach to independent filmmaking.

Workshops and panels on the topics most relevant to independent film today complete the line-up. Oh, and we’re throwing a few parties as well.
