FOURTEENTH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

Yahaan

WEDNESDAY 4 OCTOBER AT 1PM

Country India RT 138 mins Format 35mm Director Shoojit Sircar Producer Gary Grewal DoP Jakob Ihre Cast Jimmy Shergil, Minissha Lamba, Yashpal Sharma, Mukesh Tiwari Print Source Percept Picture Company Email sunny@2ppc.com

Set in the present day in the war-torn province of Kashmir, a region divided between Pakistan, China and India and locked in a bitter territorial dispute, Yahaan tells the story of Aman, a Hindu captain in the Indian Army who falls in love with a local Muslim Kashimiri girl named Adaa. As Adaa questions the unwritten law that bars women of the valley from having relationships with outsiders, the actions of her insurgent brother Shakeel begin to catch the eyes of the Indian army, and Aman soon finds his post thrown into jeopardy as he is seen as fraternizing with a family involved in terrorist activities.

More a romance than a war movie, Yahaan is not just Captain Corelli’s Mandolin set in Kashimir. Shoojit Sircar’s debut has to be one of the most intelligent and beautiful looking films to come out of India in recent years. Benefiting from the stunning mountainous landscapes in which the poignant drama unfolds together with some powerful and convincing performances, the film gives crucial insight into a conflict that is little known in the West.
