FOURTEENTH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY

When Zia (Patrick Fugit),depressed about the state of his relationship,
decides to end it all by slashing his wrists he finds himself plunged into
an alternate version of Earth. Everything seemingly looks the same, the main
difference being it's populated by somewhat dour looking inhabitants who've
all 'offed' themselves as well, which might explain the music of Kurt Cobain
and Nick Drake playing at most of the juke-boxes around town. It's not long before he discovers that his ex-girlfriend, Desiree (Leslie Bibb), the one responsible for his being there in the first place, has offed herself too. Still very much smitten, he sets out on a road trip to find her. He is joined by his new
found friend, the lusty Russian eccentric Eugene (Shea Whigam) and the
beautiful hitchhiker Mikal (Shannyn Sossaman.)
Each follows their own dream as they roll through the dusty
California desert in Eugene's battered red station wagon held together by
nothing more than duct tape.
Full of warmth and old school charm, Wristcutters' debut director Goran
Dukovic plants a heavy dose of Eastern European whimsy smack in the middle
of California and comes up with an absurdist romantic comedy that delivers a
deliciously original take on the genre.  SB

'...an affectionate slow-blooming romance mines an understated vein of comic
melancholy that the actors' wistful performances perfectly capture'- VARIETY
