Growing up is very hard to do or at least it seems that way for Samuel, a 27 year old photographer, who refuses to do just that in this lively Spanish comedy. He escapes his overbearing mother by moving to Madrid to live with his viola-playing girlfriend, Eva. Landing a magazine job as a photographer, he is soon given a taste of the harsher side of city life when he is sent to cover a brutal gangland killing. Samuel spends much of his free time in lengthy drinking sessions with his colleagues, a peculiar bunch that includes a womanising sports reporter, a bolshie political correspondent, and a blind film critic. When Eva announces she is pregnant it seems Samuel’s party days are over but is he ready to mature and take on the mantle of fatherhood?
Welcome Home is a winning mix of off-the-wall humour and touching sentiment played expertly by the ensemble cast. The witty script, by director David Trueba, makes even the most minor characters fully rounded and enjoyable, if not always likeable. You could well detect one or two home truths amid the laughs concerning our fears about getting older, making commitments in relationships and the general reluctance one may have to take the giant leap into adulthood.
