FOURTEENTH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

UNDER THE SUN [UNTER DER SONNE]

SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER AT  1:45 PM

Country Germany Running Time 60mins Format 35mm Director/ Screenplay Baran bo Odar Producer Maren Lüthje, Florian Schneider Director of Photography Nikolaus Summerer Cast Maximilian Waldmann, Janina Stopper Print Source Florian Schneider Email post@luethje-schneider.de

Playing with The Visitors 38mins

August 1984: On a hot summer’s weekend, twelve year old Viktor’s bickering parents send him to stay with his auntie’s family. Confused by the adult world and ignored by his family, Viktor’s only solace comes in the form of his older cousin, giving him a sense of comfort and experience. When the cousin herself rejects Viktor at the public pools in favour of her piers, the young boy turns to drastic measures in order to simply feel something. Unter Der Sonne features serene cinematography from Nikolaus Summerer, allowing director Odar to create breathtaking scenes without a reliance on dialogue. The film perfectly captures the feelings of inadequacy and alienation of adolescence, placing the audience firmly within Viktor’s frame of mind. The young Maximilian Waldmann portrays Viktor superbly, commanding attention despite only having a few lines. Bearing a wealth of accolades in its native Germany, the film uses a striking soundtrack (including tracks from Depeche Mode, Blondie and Soft Cell) to capture the spirit of growing up in the 1980s. Although running for only sixty minutes, the film makes use of every frame and is simply no longer than it needs to be. Unter Der Sonne leaves a long lasting impression unmatched by many longer features. JM
