Suruwat is a multi-character drama centred around the disastrous consequences that take place in a rural Nepalese village following the prayers of a young girl performed at the main village shrine. In this small indie gem from Nepal, director Pathak shines light not only on the lives of the characters but the still prevalent caste system in the region. Despite the fact that it is banned by Nepalese law it continues to exist in many parts of the country, particularly in
rural areas. Whilst it is a practice which is being slowly eroded through education this film shows how it continues to influence people’s everyday lives, from marriage to employment.
The relatively small number of Nepali films being made can often be compared to Bollywood. The larger than life storylines, broadly drawn characters, exotic locales peppered with song and dance routines however here is an example of a growing movement amongst independent filmmakers from the region who are inserting more socially conscious themes into their cinema. With promising results; in recent years we have seen such films receive international appraisal and increasingly even the more popular genres can be seen to taking
from their book in touching on more serious themes. SB book tickets for this screening
