Yet another anonymous working-man in the seething metropolis of Tokyo, Yuichi Arisu finds solace by immersing himself in the alternate world known as the Darkland created by his favourite mystery novelist Jo Kuroda. Coupled with the long working hours compulsory to his wage slave existence, this literary escapism sees him increasingly estranged from his wife.
Then one day she disappears. Could it have anything to do with his night of indiscretion with a mysterious beauty named Kayoko during a business trip to a snow-bound town in the north of Japan two years previously? Hiring a detective, Arisu is guided along a series of clues which lead to an underground brothel known as Wonderland, but when the detective is murdered and the brothel burns down, the trail turns cold and Arisu finds himself suspected of murder.
The second feature by Tokyo-resident John Williams, Starfish Hotel is a beautifully-shot fable that blurs the dividing line between fiction and reality. JS
