FOURTEENTH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

THE RIGHT OF THE WEAKEST

SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER AT 8 PM

Country France/ Belgium Running Time 116 mins Format 35mm  Director/          Screenplay Lucas Belvaux Producers Patrick Sobelman, Diana Elbaum  Director of Photography Pierre Milon Cast Eric Caravaca, natacha Regnier, Lucas Belvaus, Patrick Descamps, Claude Semal  Print Source  Tartan Flms  Email tfrain@tartanfilms.com     Website www.entrechienetloupe.be

For a group of unemployed men in Liége, every day follows a familiar ritual.
Nestled in the shadow of the steel factory that used to be the town’s main
employer they gather in a cafe to play cards. We meet fifty-something Robert
(Claude Semal), an insomniac drinker and his wheelchair bound best friend,
Jean Pierre (Patrick Descamps) who suffered an injury during his time at the
factory. Patrick (Eric Caravaca), the youngest of the three is a 30 year old househusband.

Their routine is to be broken by the arrival of an intriguing stranger with a past, Marc (Lucas Belvaux). He is revealed as an ex-con determined to go straight who now has a job untangling bottles on the assembly line of a beer factory. But for the others the dangling prospect of a life of crime seems by far the better option.

The film once again reveals Lucas Belvaux as a director who can make the
lives of ordinary people seem most extraordinary while the eye of his camera
makes an exacting comment on the march of globalization.
The film was in competition for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film
Festival.   SB

'Flashes of Ken Loach-like situational humour crossed with the unrelenting
social challenges of the Dardenne Bros. come to mind. But Belvaux, whose
interlocking "Trilogy" was powerful and inventive, continues to stake his
own stylistic claim with appealing -- if desperate -- characters'- Variety
