A heart wrenching ‘Tarnation’ type story of a dysfunctional family spiraling towards destruction. Kire Paputts’ debut traces cinema-verité style, through the attempts he made to salvage a personal relationship with his sister, Vanessa, a 20-year-old high school grad with severe anger management issues. Vanessa mocks Kire with surprisingly good songs, and extends her creative terrorism to painting, and planting items in her brother’s room to prove his homosexuality. [Kaputts is not gay, but his sister calls him a “little faggot” throughout]. Then there is Dad Kaputts, former bassist with the Viletones, and Mom, lending an otherwise bleak and dark film moments of comic relief, but all at odds with each other. When her brother decides to make a film to figure out what is making his sister so angry with him – skeletons leap out of the family closet. Kire, a second year film student in Toronto, started this project five years ago when he decided to make a series of shorts about his sister. As the project got larger, and Kire started assembling the footage, he realized that this was not just a story about his sister, or his family – but about family as a whole. EG
