When documentary filmmaker Joanna Lipper secured the remake rights to Morris Engel’s 1953 much-loved classic Little Fugitive, she knew she had a lot to live up to. Where audiences are used to reworking classics in theatre, in cinema, everyone holds up a remake to the original. She also realised that the basic story elements in Engel’s movie were as relevant in 2006 as they were over fifty years ago. She began the task of retelling the classic film (with Engel’s approval) using the history rich setting of Coney Island.
She was fortunate in finding two brilliant child actors (Castro and Salgado) who each give natural and convincing portraits of sibling rivalry gone awry when they suspect they have caused the death or destruction of the other. Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent) gives a stellar performance as the brothers incarcerated father.
Lipper manages to convey the brothers’ relationship in a poignant and gripping manner that steers well clear of sentimentality. The library footage images of electrocutions in the Coney Island of a hundred year ago are chilling and haunting, especially when juxtaposed with the two brothers questioning the Coney Island of today. There is also a hilarious appearance by Sophie Dahl as a mermaid. The film is brilliantly shot on HD by Richard Sands. This is Joanna’s debut as feature film director and screenwriter. CPR
