FOURTEENTH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

LITTLE BIRDS [Ritoru Baazu - Iraku Senka no Kazoku-tachi]

SUNDAY 1 OCTOBER AT 8:15PM

Country Japan RT 103 mins Ft DVcam NTSC Director Takeharu Watai
Print Source Yasuoka Films Email info@littlebirds.net

As the U.S. armed forces enter Iraq in April 2003, Watai Takeharu remains in the country where he continues shooting portraits of Iraqi citizens in his powerful documentary shot in Baghdad, Samawa, Falluja, and Abu Ghraib. Watai listens to the voices of the Iraqi people. He succeeds in catching glimpses of truth about the war that the sound bite-dominated mainstream media seems to have, by and large, kept the general public shielded from.
After witnessing a woman standing in front of a U.S. tank and shouting, “How many children have you killed? Go to the hospital and see the people dying!” Watai visits Thawra Hospital in Baghdad. There in the middle of this tragic mess, he meets 31-year-old Ali Saqban, whose daughter lies fatally wounded. Saqban lost two elder brothers during the Iran-Iraq War, and was himself injured during the Kuwait invasion. Now he has lost three of his children and his house has been destroyed by the bomb raids over the capital. We follow his harrowing story as he attempts to rebuild a new life. JS
