First there was J-horror, then there was K-horror. Now there’s T-horror, coming in the form of The Heirloom, Taiwan’s first addition to the burgeoning genre of atmospheric Asian supernatural chillers.
Architect James Yang returns to Taipei after a spell in the UK to inspect the vast but gloomy ruined mansion that he has inherited. As his ballet dancer girlfriend Yo moves in with him, it very soon becomes apparent to both of them that something is awry. Friends disappear, corpses turn up in the bathtub and family secrets of an institutionalized aunt, a family curse and other dark traditions are revealed.
Following his debut Uninhibited, Leste Chen’s sophomore feature became the second biggest domestic grosser of the year upon its release in Taiwan. An effective addition to the old dark house horror genre combining the sins of our fathers motif, The Heirloom is drenched in an ominous and pervasive atmosphere of doom and gloom, and comes liberally sprinkled with shocks and scares.
