Celebrated Butoh dancer, Oguri, relocates to the desert in search of rediscovery and reconnection with his work. The need for a rapport with this bare and vacant place leads Oguri on a personal journey of movement and dance experiments - the depurated style of the film flattering both the tracing of his movements and the strange radiance of this desolate place. Oguri’s dance exegesis set against the grainy desert could be an allegory for limitless pursuit and unhindered reconnection with bare nature.
Oguri has lead groups of people from across the world and undergoes individual dance trips through the Mojave and Colorado deserts regularly. It is on these journeys that Oguri encounters a clash between the supposedly enlightened values of modern society and the fragility of nature. This artistic process, in which hundreds of miles are traversed on foot, has inspired a substantial number of original pieces which Oguri performed in and around the Joshua Tree National Park between 1999 and 2004. These performances are documented here by acclaimed dance-filmmakers Charles Steiner and Morleigh Steinberg, and performance photographer Roger Burns. Height of Sky examines the genesis of Oguri’s dance practice in its connection with natural environments and the shift from the desert to the concert hall. ER
