Gower Boy, originally commissioned by the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, is a gentle, comtemplative exploration of the Gower Peninsula in Wales, the childhood stomping ground of jazz pianist Huw Warren.
The film was directed and shot by Gee Vaucher who was responsible for the highly political artwork and films for the anarchist-punk band Crass. In her works at that time appeared all the most perverse of human hallucinations: politicians turned into monsters, smiling housewives armed with machine guns, soldiers shooting the homeless, destroyed homes inhabited by families hypnotised by the TV. Gower Boy shows a very different creativity to to the work for which Gee is best known.
Pianist and composer Huw Warren never ceases to amaze as a thrilling musician and composer. Winner of the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation in 2005, he was short listed for the 2006 Arts Foundation fellowship in Jazz Composition. He has worked with folk diva June Tabor as musical director/pianist for over a decade and recently collaborated with pianist Joanna McGregor and the Orlando Consort (as co-leader of Perfect Houseplants).
Gower Boy is an off-beat collaboration between these two extremely talented artists. The film is accompanied live in the cinema by Huw Warren on piano. DT
