The young, innocent Sara has one thing on her mind: losing her virginity. When her date takes her out to the popular nightclub, "El Calentito", only to stand her up, she drowns her sorrows and winds up in bed with the lead singer from the headlining all-girl band, Las Sioux. Through a peculiar turn of events, Sara becomes the newest member of Las Sioux, along with hyper-sexual Carmen and hyper- active Leo, who are on the verge of signing a recording contract. Diving headfirst into the punk scene of early 1980's Madrid, she struggles to survive through social, musical, and sexual conflicts - all of which lead up to a climactic performance on February 23rd, the night a coup d'etat threatened to take down the Spanish democracy.
Featuring energetic and spirited performances, as well as catchy, thrashing songs from the girls of Las Sioux that can sometimes sound as awful as the garage band next-door, "El Calentito" chronicles an unusual coming-of-age with an intriguing cast of characters. Nuria Gonzales has won critical acclaim for her performance as the transvestite proprietor of the club, Antonia, who continues to endure discrimination despite the recent progress in government law. Director and co-writer Chus Guittérez infuses her work with an empowered feeling of female libertad. NW
