Disorder marks a stylish debut for director/screenwriter Jack Thomas Smith.
An intense noir, Disorder tells the story a newly released prisoner (Kendrick) who returns to his small American hometown with the hope of starting a new life. In addition he vows to clear his name after serving time for a double murder he did not commit. Events however conspire against him and he soon finds himself sucked into a debilitating downward spiral that leads him to question his own sanity and fear for his life.
Kendrick’s character attempts to defend co-worker (Lauren Seikaly) from a mysterious stranger who reminds him of the actual suspect years earlier. As the ensuing drama heats up, Kendrick starts to suspect everyone, including himself, of having committing the murders.
Reminiscent of early Coen Brothers –Blood Simple springs to mind - this elegant portrayal of one man’s struggle to defend himself and his reputation against the odds, follows the story beats of the classic thriller. I started, heart in my mouth, several times during my preview, and the story entertains with a quadruple-twist ending. Smith admits to the influences of George Romero, Stanley Kubrick and John Carpenter. Whatever the influences, Disorder marks Smith as a talent to keep an eye out for in the future. EG
