This is not another typical American indie about drug addicts waving their guns around looking for their next fix. On the surface, this raw and gritty film could fall into the pitfalls of many indie films, but skillfully avoids them.
Tully’s junkie, brilliantly played by Damian Lahey, is different from other junkies: he may be a lost and tortured soul, but he still has a house, a job, an ex-wife, a daughter and a car.
Lahey drives the film with a natural, motor-mouth performance that makes the movie. His character, Scott, avoids the addict-as-lifestyle sensationalism (be it glamorous or devastating) and Cocaine Angel shows the quiet absurdity of the situation: the tragic yet darkly comic life of a weary young drug addict. The movie’s characters are certainly on a downward spiral, but their situations often come across as humorous as much as hopeless. The specific situations may be different, but the general notion of trying to get through one day to the next is universal, although in this scenario, Scott is desperately trying to cling onto his dreams in the sweat and stink of a burning-hot Jacksonville. DoP Shawn Lewallen skilfully blends Super 8mm and DV.
Cocaine Angel is Michael’s first feature film as a director. He also writes for indiewire.com and is a musician who goes by the name of Encopresis. EG
