Tadao (nicknamed Tada) goes to a private school, which keeps him apart from the other local kids. His home life is certainly no picnic however. As his bullying father takes an unhealthy interest in Tada’s legs, his mother pretends not to notice, distracting herself by stealing pot plants from gardens in the surrounding neighbourhood.
Meanwhile Aya, Tada’s friend since nursery, lives with a promiscuous mother who frequently ushers her from the house when she has men to stay. As Tada and Aya run wild around local area, Tada’s father becomes jealous of their friendship. One night, he forces his way into Tada’s bed. The next day, Tada goes to meet Aya at their usual meeting place, and together they plot revenge on their parents.
This debut feature from ultra-talented newcomer Noriko Shibutani takes its title from an alternate reading of the Japanese characters that make up the name of the drab working-class suburbs of Shishibone where its two young protagonists run wild, indulging in their childish secret games. Conveyed in a hypnotic collage of incidents and impressions, BAMBI BONE presents a child’s eye of an environment where adventure and danger run hand in hand. JS
